DOE said on October 13 that it plans to support TVA’s 84 transmission and distribution projects across eight states. The stated package is approximately $581 million: $250 million federal funding and about $331 million applicant cost share. DOE expects roughly 2.5 gigawatts of added grid capacity.
The project count and federal grant amount have a public history. On October 18, 2024, TVA announced that it and ten local power companies had been selected for a $250 million GRIP grant covering 84 energy-security projects across eight states. TVA’s contemporary statement described selection to begin negotiations, not completed construction.
The two records agree on the core scope while describing capacity differently: TVA’s 2024 release said up to 2,400 megawatts, while DOE’s new release says approximately 2.5 gigawatts. This dispatch preserves those dates and formulations instead of treating the later number as measured output.
DOE says final funding, scope, schedules and award conditions remain subject to executed agreements and applicable reviews. A renewed announcement is not evidence that all the infrastructure has been installed. The mechanism is a funding-and-approval chain whose physical result must still be measured.
