What is on the record

A ransomware attack stopped virtual servers across four IDCF Cloud zones and pushed recovery back onto customer-held copies.

Statements retain the attribution and limits of the linked dispatch. A vendor report is not an independent forensic finding.

Recovery is a separate finding.

This file records published developments. It does not infer recovery, attribution or closure from a patch release or the absence of a follow-up.

Questions to track: changes to scope, attribution and recovery. Individual dispatches distinguish what is established, disputed or still unreported.

The cloud became four rooms with the lights off. IDC Frontier says unauthorized access beginning at approximately 3:40 a.m. Japan time on October 7 stopped virtual servers in the Tesla, Henry, Pascal and Joule zones of its East Japan Region 1. The company identified the cause as a third-party ransomware attack. The incident affected 495 companies and local governments, according to the provider’s October 8 update. Virtual servers in the affected zones could not be restarted. IDC Frontier said recovery of data stored there appeared difficult and advised customers that restoration might be possible only from backups they held themselves. The provider disconnected the region from the network, stopped its management console and began investigating networks, servers and storage with an outside security company. It advised customers in the affected zones to rebuild in a separate environment. Other regions had no confirmed unauthorized access at the time of the notice, but their externally accessible management consoles were also stopped while checks continued. This is the physical meaning of a cloud outage. The abstraction ends at particular racks, storage systems, network boundaries and recovery copies. Availability zones distribute failure only when their control planes and backups do not share the same path to failure. A backup controlled by the same compromised system is a second copy of the problem. Important facts remain unknown. IDC Frontier had not publicly identified the intrusion path, the ransomware operator or the complete impact when it issued the update. Meatspace Today will treat those as open questions, not empty spaces to fill with attribution.
